A Rockport man was found under the Champ Clark Bridge over the Mississippi River, Monday, Feb. 16 at approximately 12:57 p.m. by an Illinois State Trooper. He was pronounced dead by the Pike County Coroner’s office.
The trooper was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked on U.S. 54, the east end of the bridge, on the Illinois side. Travelers reported seeing the vehicle there as early as 3:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, the trooper found John A. Sobie, 55, deceased under the bridge on the south side of the highway. Sobie’s truck was parked on the bridge just out of the east bound lane.
The incident remains under investigation by the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois State Police, and the Pike County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy has been performed.
