Small town, rural communities do not have the resources of the larger, metropolitan areas who can afford to pay for some vital services, therefore, volunteerism is looked upon as not only noble, but needed.
People’s Bank and Trust of White Hall recognizes those who volunteer their time to their communities and each quarter they recognize those who go above and beyond in the donation of their time and effort for their communities.
They are proud to announce that Volunteer of the Quarter for the second quarter is Rob McMillen for his work throughout the North Greene Community.
For over 37 years, McMillen has served as a law enforcement officer; 21 of those in his hometown of White Hall, 18 of which he served as Chief of Police. For the past 16 years he has served all of Greene County as the Greene County Sheriff.
While serving as White Hall Police Chief, McMillen started White Hall’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt, which continues to provide a fun Easter Egg Hunt experience for the youth throughout Greene and the surrounding counties.
In addition to serving as Greene County Sheriff, he also serves as Chairman of the West Central Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB or 911 Dispatch Center). The ETSB is responsible for providing 911 services to Greene, Calhoun and Morgan counties.
He also volunteers for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, where he instructs students in Hunter Safety. If this isn’t enough to keep him busy, during the school year, he can be found at the North Greene football games where he has been running the game clocks for more than 20 years.
“Public service is not only a job that I perform daily, it is something that I have found brings me great enjoyment in performing for the communities that I serve,” McMillen said. “I am a firm believer that volunteering in the community is an essential and necessary duty that public servants owe their residents.”
After serving four terms as Greene County Sheriff, McMillen will be retiring at the end of November.
“Volunteerism is one of the strongest forces in building and sustaining our communities and Rob truly reflects that commitment through the time, energy and care he consistently gives to others,” John Gardner, President and CEO of Peoples Bank said. “We are pleased to recognized Rob as the White Hall branch Volunteer of the Quarter in appreciation of his dedication and the positive difference he continues to make in our community.”
In honor of Rob’s services, People’s Bank and Trust is making a $250 donation to the Healthy Hoops Project in his name. McMillen’s name will be added to a plaque on display at the bank, which recognizes past volunteers.
As a community bank, People’s Bank and Trust recognizes the value of volunteerism in the community. To recognize, commend, promote and encourage volunteerism, they have established the Volunteer of the Quarter program to recognize outstanding community members for their volunteer efforts to improve the community.
