Gabe Howard and the 4×100 relay each won championships to lead West Central at the IESA Seventh Grade Boys’ State Track and Field meet at Eastside Center in East Peoria.
The Cougars finished tied with Altamont for third place as a team with 27 points. Colfax Ridgevew won the championship with 50 points, and Paris Crestwood finished second with 32.
Howard, the son of Greg and Julie Howard, won the discus with a distance of 132-9. The winning mark was not his personal best.
“He threw his personal best at sectionals,” coach Jason Likes said. “He threw 148.8 1/2 at sectionals. That is his personal best and a school record.”
He finished ninth in the shot put at 36-1.
The 4×100 relay won with a time of 49.79. Tony Clark, Anthony Hance, Blayne Sidwell and Liam Melanson each ran in the relay.
Hance finished seventh in the long jump at 16-7½.
The 4×400 relay finished fourth in 4:17.92. Layton Albers, Sidwell, Clark and Melanson ran in the relay.
Melanson finished tenth in the 200 in 25.88
