Relay for life is holding a Cosmic Bowl Family Fun Day at Tri-County Bowl in Jerseyville on Sunday, Aug. 7.
The annual event will take place from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. including a Survivor and Caregiver Reception at noon and two Cosmic Family Bowl/Scotch Doubles Tournament time slots, one from 1 to 3 p.m. and the other from 4 to 6 p.m.
There will also be a Luminaria Ceremony taking place between the bowling sessions, at 3 p.m. Luminarias are lit up and used to represent those who have been lost to cancer and to celebrate those who are now cancer free. Luminaria can be purchased by contacting Glenda Gray at 618-946-7318. They can also be purchased at the event.
Relay for Life of Jersey/Greene Counties Chair Kayla Baumgartner shared the purpose of the organization as well as where the funds go once they are raised by events like the one to be held in Jerseyville next month.
“Funds raised by the Relay for Life of Jersey/Greene Counties go to support our local services that American Cancer Society has to offer as well as to cancer research,”
Baumgartner said. “The American Cancer Society provides rides to treatments, free wigs and make-up for patients, free lodging in St. Louis at the Hope Lodge and a 24-hour support hotline for patients and caregivers.”
Baumgartner has served on the committee for over 20 years and said she is “determined to keep the fundraising alive in our community.”
“As the local aspect is dwindling due to families and friends now hosting benefits for local families that are affected by cancer, it makes it harder to get people involved locally towards our mission,” she said.
Baumgartner is enthusiastic about the bowling event and invites everyone in Jersey and Greene counties as well as the surrounding areas to join in on the fun day.
“We are hoping for a fun family day of cosmic bowl and that people support this fundraiser so we can continue to offer these programs to our community,” said Baumgartner.
Anyone needing assistance with signing up to receive Relay for Life’s benefits may email their regional representative at [email protected] or contact Baumgartner directly at [email protected].
