Those eager to get a start on spring gardening were happy to attend the season opening of the Grab ‘n’ Go Greenhouse in Riggston on Saturday. Owner and operator Jenny Sauer-Schmidgall said the opening day saw a bigger crowd than she had expected.
“We had well over a hundred people,” she said, adding that the crowd was excited and ready to shop. “Everyone was in good spirits. They were happy to be here and get their plants.”
Mueller Farms of Bluffs stocked both the greenhouse and the adjacent shop.
“They have their produce in the shop,” she said, which included lettuce and several varieties of tomatoes.
Among them were big beef, sun sugar, Berkeley tie dye, Carolina gold and Amish paste. In addition were jalapeno, habanero, sweet, bell and candy cane peppers. Meullers’ had plenty of other items available in the greenhouse.
“They have vegetable and herb plants,” she said, which had been restocked on Sunday afternoon. “We went through quite a bit of produce but we weren’t complaining.”
Herb varieties available were dill, oregano, basils, lavender, sage, mint and catnip, to name a few. In addition to vegetables and herbs, the greenhouse had flowers for sale.
“A lot of rarer looking petunias, osteospermum varieties, bunny tails, grass, hollyhocks and verbascum,” she said.
The Los Rancheros staff, who provided lunch from their food truck, were pleased with the turnout too.
“They ran out of some of their food,” she said.
She added that she was surprised at the distance some of her customers were willing to travel to come to Grab ‘n’ Grow.
“We have people from Springfield and there’s a family from Perry and even Franklin,” she said. “There are people in those places that are wanting this kind of concept in their own towns, to alleviate the issue of having to make that kind of drive, so they can shop local too.”
The Grab ‘n’ Grow Greenhouse Shop and Greenhouse are open every day of the week from 5 a.m. to7 p.m. and 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
