Routt outscored West Central in each of the first three quarters and beat the Cougars 54-45 in boys’ basketball Feb. 1 at Bluffs.
The Cougars trailed 38-28 after three quarters but scored the first four points of the fourth. Tyson Brown made a three-point basket, and Chance Little made one of two free throw attempts as West Central got within 38-32.
Zack Evans made two free throws, and West Central trailed 40-34 with 5:19 remaining in the game. The Cougars made just one of their last six field goal attempts in the game. Routt went 8-for-12 from free throw line to seal the win.
Routt scored the first five points of the game and never trailed. Payton Hartley scored with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter as West Central got within 9-8. The Cougars missed its next three field goal attempts and trailed 15-10 after one quarter.
Tysyn Mast made a three-point basket, and the Cougars trailed just 18-15 with 5:35 remaining in the second quarter. Routt scored seven straight points to extend its lead t0 points and led by 11 late in the first half. Hartley made a three-point basket at the buzzer, and West Central trailed 28-20 at halftime.
Mast made two free throws with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter to get the Cougars within 38-33. Routt scored the next five points and led by 10 points after three quarters.
The Cougars made just 13 of 45 (29 percent) field goal attempts in the game. Routt made 18 of 34 (53 percent) field goal attempts.
Mast scored 11 points to lead the Cougars (17-8, 5-2 in the WIVC). Evans scored nine points and had three assists and three steals. Brown and Hartley each scored seven points.
Lathan Barnett scored six points, and Little scored five. Jaydon Howard had five rebounds.
Routt won the junior varsity game 44-35.
Carson Brown scored 16 points to lead West Central. Caden Meyer scored six points. Dalton Hutton and Landon Woods each scored four points. Cameron Sievers scored three points, and Zac Howard scored two points.
