Greenfield School Board members were in and out of the board room in less than an hour on Feb. 28 for their monthly board meeting which set just fine with Superintendent Kevin Bowman.
“A quick meeting means everything is going good in the district and that is something that we all like to hear,” Bowman said. “We were in and out, including a closed session in only 45 minutes, which I think is an all-time record.”
District highlights included District Librarian Elayne Willis reporting on the library for the month of February.
“They held their book fair in February, which was very successful and the students are being recognized monthly for excelling in the Accelerated Reader program,” Bowman said. “She also said that she applied for the Library Grant and that it was approved.”
Willis also said that the Washington D.C. trip last summer was a success and that they are preparing for another trip in the summer of 2023.
The Greenfield Foundation for Educational Excellence (GFEE) has their main fundraiser of the year coming up – their annual Pork Chop Dinner – on March 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Michaels Hall.
Despite the drop in COVID numbers, the GFEE will continue to have carry-out only this year.
“For a couple of years now, because of COVID, they have done carry-out only and it has been very successful and run so smoothly,” Bowman said. “So, we figured it was a good way to continue to run it because we don’t have to worry about getting all of the inside stuff and it takes less people to help run it and get the meals ready. All we have to do is get the meals ready and send them out the door. It has worked out really well the last two years and we hope it continues to do so.”
The district will be posting for a new pre-k teacher as their current pre-k teacher, Deeanna McClure has been assigned to the position of Title I Director.
It is a goal of most rural school districts to hire former students and Greenfield has done just that with the employment of Abigail Weisner as the new high school English teacher.
“We are very excited to be able to announce that our new English teacher is a former student and graduate of Greenfield high school,” Bowman said. “It is always good when you are able to hire someone who comes back home after getting their education.”
In other news, the board accepted the resignation of teacher’s aide Laura Steidley.
