At the Wednesday, March 16, meeting of the Western school board, board members approved the bid from Weir Brothers Groundskeeping for mowing and grounds keeping for the summer of 2022.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, board members heard from members of Western’s student council, who presented a proposal to change the school district’s grading scale, in order to help alleviate student stress and to increase student eligibility for extracurricular activities. The students cited alternative grading systems used at other districts and recommended two different grading scales for the board to consider.
Board members also approved an overnight trip for Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students to attend the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Springfield on April 1st and 2nd. Ten Western students will participate in the conference.
At the conference, students have the opportunity to participate in over 60 competitive events for a chance to attend the national conference. In addition, students attend workshops, meet 1,600 FBLA students from around the state, and tour historic sites in Springfield.
With the approval of the meeting’s consent agenda, the board approved renewal of NWEA MAP assessment tools for $6,902.50 and the renewal of eSpark curriculum and teaching resources for $17,550 – paid using Title I and II funds.
In addition, the board approved the first reading of PRESS policy updates, as well as a facility use agreement with Grace Baptist Church to use the Kinderhook gymnasium.
Following closed session, board members approved the resignation of Kati Hinch as paraprofessional, effective April 4.
The board also approved the following appointments:
■ Stefanie Rennecker as part-time elementary counselor for 22-23.
■ Stefanie Rennecker as part-time counselor mentor from August to December of next school year.
