The Neighborhood Guys and Gals 4-H Club of Scott County recently received a Farm Credit Illinois recently awarded a community improvement grant in the amount of $500 to improve outdoor areas at the Scott County Nursing Center (SCNC).
The club used the grant funds to paint and spruce up the outdoor pavilion at SCNC, and they built new benches for outdoor seating. The benches were built by 4-H member Allie Jones. At least 20 4-H members pitched in to complete the service activities.
According to Guys and Gals 4-H CLub leader Pam Hembrough, service activities like the one undertaken at SCNC serve an important purpose.
“An important part of 4-H is community service,” Hembrough said. “It gives the kids a sense of purpose, and they get to see the value in it.”
Hembrough said the 4-H Club decided to pitch in at SCNC, because the facility’s staff is already stretched thin.

Guys and Gals 4-H members Kylar Coon, Jada Lawson, Evynn Gregory, Emerson Little, Lanie Rueter, and Ella Little worked to stain the pavilion floor at the Scott COunty Nursing Home as part of a community improvement activity. Over 20 members of the 4-H club took part in the activity.
“We decided to work there, because they don’t necessarily have the manpower to take on those projects,” Hembrough said.

In addition, Hembrough said that club members got a lot out of the project, because they received positive feedback from SCNC residents.
“The kids could see the smiles on residents’ faces,” Hembrough said.
SCNC Business Office Manager Megan Howard also said that the improvements made by the 4-H Club were very much appreciated by SCNC staff and residents.
“They’re a great group of kids, and Pam Hembrough is amazing,” Howard said. “They added so much color out there, and they worked really hard. They made it look better and made it nicer for residents to be outside.”
The Neighborhood Guys and Gals 4-H club was one of 50 4-H clubs and FFA chapters to receive a community improvement grant. This year Farm Credit Illinois has awarded a total of $25,000 in grant funds to clubs and chapters making tangible contributions in their communities by implementing an improvement project.
Neighborhood Guys and Gals 4-H Club is a very active and service oriented 4-H club located in Scott County. They do multiple service projects throughout the year, striving to make the community a better place for its citizens.
