A motorcycle accident in Calhoun County, over the weekend, resulted in the death of a Springfield, Ill. man.
On Saturday, July 30, the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department responded to a single vehicle accident involving a motorcycle along Route 100 between Hardin and Kampsville.
According to Calhoun County Sheriff Bill Heffington, the Illinois State Police (ISP) were on scene conducting the investigation. ISP found that the motorcycle was traveling southbound, north of Michael Road, when the rider braked and began to skid. The bike came to a rest in the northbound lanes.
Heffington said the report showed that the driver, identified as Daniel T. Reckmo, age 40, “lost control of the bike and laid it down on the pavement.” Reckmo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rumors have circulated online, claiming the accident was a hit and run, but Heffington said that has not been found to be the case.
“This wasn’t a hit and run. After the bike went down, the other cars were swerving to dodge the subject,” he said. “The accident appears to be due to loss of control. One driver swerved to miss the bike and ended up with a blowout, so that may be why people thought it was a hit and run.”
An autopsy was conducted and the accident remains under investigation. No further information has been made available at this time.
