Following a busy Barry Apple Festival weekend, Barry’s city council held a regular meeting Monday, Oct. 3.
The council voted to donate $200 to the Apple Festival Queen Scholarship fund, a regular contribution made by the city government.
City Administrator Jeff Hogge reported that the past weekend’s Barry Apple Festival was very well attended.
“By and large I thought it went very well,” Hogge said. “Perfect weather always helps.”
A highlight of the Apple Festival, Hogge said, was the car show.
“I’m guessing they had close to 400 cars,” Hogge said. “I think I remember hearing they had 317 pre-registered. Then they had at least 50 show up, and that was early on in the game.”
Hogge said there were large crowds during the event.
“There were points where you couldn’t walk down the middle of Bainbridge Street, because there were so many people,” Hogge said.
In other business, Barry recently completed its fall cleanup, where residents got rid of refuse and waste from their properties.
“It was good to get a lot of that stuff cleaned out of here,” Hogge said.
Three methamphetamine arrests have recently been made in Barry following a search of a residence on the 700 block of Williams Street in Barry.
“The Sheriff’s Office said they had one of their biggest meth busts in a while,” Hogge said. “We’re glad they take care of that kind of stuff.”
In addition, Hogge stated that the Barry Thrift Store building will be auctioned on Thursday, Oct. 6. The contents will be auctioned the following week.
Hogge also said that the building which housed Ruthie’s Blackberry Run is for sale, and it is receiving positive attention from potential buyers.
“We’re seeing some interest in Ruthie’s building,” Hogge said. “It’s got a relatively new roof on it. They had gotten some TIF money from the city to do some work not too long ago.”
