Crowds of little ghosts, goblins, witches, and movie characters flooded the Kampsville American Legion Marvin Richter Ballfield for the annual Trunk-or-Treat which took place on Sunday. There were 26 decorated trunks for the kids to visit and candy was not in short-supply.
The event was put on by the Kampsville Kids Committee, which is headed up by Diane Brangenberg and Debby Klunk as co-chairs and Cricket Quiller, Brenda Johnson, and Brianna Titus, Cara McClellan, Olivia and Emily Clowers as members.
Funds collected by the event’s raffles will be put toward the annual Christmas Party, which, much like the Halloween festivities, is free to attend. Assisting with the fundraising was Modern Woodmen Chapter Coordinator Allen Johnson who sponsored the event. He said his organization will match up to $2,500 to funds raised in the Halloween event raffles.
“The matching funds will help us pay for the Christmas party, which is just like the Halloween party, except for obviously we have Santa and the Grinch,” said Brangenberg. “And every kid gets a gift. The only thing that we charge any money for is if they buy chances for the basket raffles.”
The reason these events are free, according to Brangenberg, is to ensure everyone who wants to attend can do so.
“It was always our goal to have an event that even families and kids that maybe couldn’t afford to go and do lots of things would be able to come and spend no money,” she said. “That is why the only thing people have to pay for is if they choose to take chances on the raffles.”
Calhoun County royals were present to judge the trunks and hand out prizes to the winners. Their selection for “Most Creative Trunk” was Emily Clowers with her Charlie Brown themed trunk; “Scariest Trunk” was won by Lucas and Patty Fanning with their trunk decked out in skeletons; “Funniest Trunk” went to Lisa Breden’s mermaid trunk along with Noah Breden and Aaliyah Lewis who took turns dressing as mermaids; and “Favorite Trunk” went to Marcia Agney with her Hocus Pocus themed trunk.
The North Calhoun Fire Protection District was present, along with their fire dog mascot, Marshal, who posed for pictures with the trunk-or-treaters.
The Trunk-or-Treat took place from 4 to 5 p.m. and was followed up by the Kids Halloween Party in the Kampsville Gymnasium from 5 to 6 p.m.
According to Brangenberg the events were well-attended. She said they had the “most successful Trunk-or-Treat ever” and the Kids Halloween Party was the “biggest we ever had.”
“We were so happy with the turnout,” she said.
Brangenberg extended gratitude to Illinois Riverdock, Hardin Subway, Straight Home and the Hardin Drive-In for providing prizes.
