Rick Hires, former associate facility manager at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton for 47 years, will present an oral history program about the funeral home on Sunday, Nov. 20, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Greene County Historical Society.
“Who better to present such a program to the members and friends of the society than Rick Hires,” Greene County Historical Society Member Larry Gillingham said. “He is a well-known raconteur and entertainer, known by so many.”
Airsman-Hires Funeral Home, is an imposing brick structure, located at the corner of Fifth and Walnut Streets in Carrollton. The Victorian home was built by Dr. J.K. Sharon, a dentist, in 1859. The home was set on the Sharon family’s 80-acre farm, which stretched east toward the present city park.
The history was told to Lynn P. Simpson, founder of the Simpson Funeral Home, by members of the Sharon Family, and then passed on to Jess Hires and finally on to Rick Hires. A large real estate abstract also presented interesting facts about the property’s history.
The program will follow a brief Historical Society business meeting and will be held in the historic Lee-Baker-Hodges House located on the northwest corner of the public square in Carrollton. Everyone is invited to attend and there is no charge to attend.
