Julian Wells American Legion Post #442 Commander Matt Barber speaks to attendees at the post’s third annual Veterans Ball. The ball honors all branches of the military and serves as a fundraiser for the American Legion’s building fund.
Winchester’s Julian Wells American Legion Post #442 recently held its annual Veterans Ball.
The formal event was the post’s third annual ball.
According to Post Commander Matt Barber, the ball is designed as a social event and fundraiser.
“All the money goes to the American Legion’s building fund,” Barber said. “We raised a little over $3,000. We try and keep the prices reasonable, so that veterans and their families can come.”
Barber said that he was pleased with attendance, but he hopes to attract more attendees next year.
“It was good,” Barber said. “We had about 70 people. Next year, we think we will have more, because it will be tied in with the weekend of Veterans Day.”
The evening featured live music from Isaiah Littgig and the Rebel Saints. In addition, activities included a gameshow-like competition called “Military Feud,” which was based on the popular game show Family Feud.
Barber said that the Veterans Ball is unique, because it includes all of the military branches.
“The whole thing is that usually each branch has its own ball,” Barber said. “Our ball is unique. The only other ball I’m aware of that is like this is in D.C. at the Pentagon. We honor all the branches of the service and their traditions.”
