The past several years have been difficult, with rising employee wages, high cost of newspaper print and business supplies, as well as impacts made from the nation-wide coronavirus responses, and newspapers across the country are now being faced with grave survival decisions. Some of those decisions affect the communities they have served for decades.
The Calhoun News-Herald (CNH) has been a part of Calhoun County for generations, and the newspaper will continue to carry on that proud tradition. Unfortunately, however, some changes must be made.
Starting on Feb. 1, 2023, the CNH subscription cost is going to increase and the new rates will be:
■ Inside the trade area– $50
■ Outside the trade area– $70
■ Seniors will be offered a $2.50 discount rate
Print subscription rates include a free E-Edition.
The E-Edition will remain at $31 per year.
“We’ve tried to hold the line as long as we could,” stated Greg Hoskins, publisher of the Calhoun News-Herald. “The cost of newsprint and press plant supplies alone have more than tripled.”
Additionally, the cost of a single copy issue will increase to $1.50.
The increase is still less than $1 per week or 35 percent off the single copy rate.
Hoskins said the decision was not easy to make and he shared that, for the next several weeks, subscribers will still have the opportunity to renew their subscriptions at the old rate.
“We care about our residents and want them to have every opportunity to receive the latest community’s news. In this day and age, being on top of city council, school board, and police news is more important than ever,” said Hoskins. “We want to give all our current subscribers, as well as future subscribers, a chance to lock into our current prices. You can subscribe up to the next five years at the current rate. You will have until Jan. 31, 2023 to take advantage of this opportunity.”
