The rumors have been on the horizon for weeks, but at the February meeting of the North Greene School Board, Superintendent Mark Scott confirmed those rumors by announcing his resignation, effective June 30.
Scott accepted a position as Superintendent with the Nauvoo-Colussa School District beginning on July 1.
“I signed the contract with them on Feb. 13 and gave the board my resignation on the 15th,” Scott said. “I really hate moving my kids, but it was an offer that I just couldn’t pass up.”
Scott signed a three-year contract with Nauvoo-Colussa at a salary of $154,000 the first year, $156,000 the second year and $161,000 the third year. He is currently making $120,000 at North Greene.
But what made the deal even more enticing is that the district has less than one-fourth of the students that North Greene has so there will be much less work involved, according to Scott.
“North Greene has 860 and the district I’m moving to has less than 200,” Scott said. “We have 140 employees here at North Greene and they have like 50. We have like 23 grants I’m working on and they have two. Do the math.”
Scott said there are a lot of districts currently looking for superintendents.
“I turned down two other jobs and had several other interviews I turned down because I already had this deal going with Nauvoo,” he said. “So, there are plenty of jobs out there.”
Scott is a hometown boy, graduating from North Greene High School in 1994. After receiving his teaching certificate, he taught third grade at Roodhouse Elementary for two years. His next stop was Bluffs where he taught PE and health for one year and then he came back to Greene County and Carrollton where he taught seventh and eighth grade for one year.
Then, he came back to North Greene and White Hall Elementary where he taught third grade for six or seven years until he was made principal of that building. Then, eight years ago, after receiving his Superintendent’s Certificate, he became the Superintendent of the District. Altogether, he has 22 years with the North Greene District.
North Greene School Board will be having a special school board meeting to discuss their options for hiring a replacement for Scott. One option is to hire an interim superintendent until a permanent replacement can be found, much like Greenfield has done.
