Charges were dismissed against a Roodhouse man last week in regards to a home invasion case that took place last summer, but he won’t be hitting the streets again – he will be going to a group home facility.
John J. Scheferkort, 31, of rural Roodhouse, was charged in Greene County Circuit Court on June 22, 2022 with one count of Criminal Trespass to a Residence with a Person Present and one count of Aggravated Assault/Use of a Deadly Weapon.
The charges allege that on June 22 Scheferkort broke into the home of Arthur and Angela Churchill. Upon noticing the homeowners, he allegedly brandished an eight-inch hunting knife. He then left the home, but was later apprehended by Greene County Deputies.
The above charges were dismissed by the state with leave to reinstate should certain conditions not be met in the long term. Scheferkort underwent a mental health examination in August and was found unfit to stand trial and was remanded to the custody of the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS).
Scheferkort will be placed in a long-term structured group home environment where he will continue to receive mental health treatment so long as precautions are in place where he can’t get out and commit similar criminal offenses in the future.
