The Brussels American Legion is holding their annual Fish Fries on Friday, March 24; and Friday, March 31.
The fries have been a tradition of the Legion’s for over 25 years, and is a treasured past-time for the organization.
“People getting together and cooking is what makes it special,” said Gloria Syders. “It’s a really good time.”
The Fish Fries offer many foods and desserts, such as catfish, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, cakes, apple pie, cherry pie, and peach pie. Admission is free and plates are $13 for adults and $7 for children. The Legion offers this event for two weekends as opposed to one, as it offers a greater opportunity for people to support the Legion.
“With the pandemic and energy costs going up along with insurance costs, it’s a good way to support us,” said Legion Commander Bernard Synders. “We’ve been doing this 25 years, all the funds go back to helping the Legion.”
It’s become harder to support the local Legion chapter due to the increasing age of the chapter members, and fewer helping hands. Commander Synders hopes that the fish fries will aid in easing some of the chapter’s burdens through community involvement.
Several groups have provided service to the Legion, including the Sons of the American Legion, as well as the Modern Woodmen of America. The Modern Woodmen provided the Legion with a $500 match fund for the event. The Girl Scouts of America have also lended a helping hand to the Legion in these leaner times.
“The Girl Scouts do a lot for the legion,” Synders said. “They help us on Memorial weekend by placing flags on the graves.”
The Girl Scouts will be hosting a bake sale during the fish fry weekends this month. All are encouraged to attend the event for a good time and a good cause.
“We wanna give everyone a good meal,” Snyders said.
The Legion recently changed its contact number to 618-883-2579 for anyone interested in obtaining further information or helping out the Legion.
