The calendar says it’s spring (though Mother Nature sometimes says otherwise) and that means one thing – it’s time for the Winchester Odd Fellows Lodge Spring Burgoo.
The Oddfellows Lodge will continue their tradition this Saturday, April 1, in Douglas Park on the Winchester Square beginning at noon.
“We promise this is not an April Fool’s joke, but we are confident that the burgoo this year will be every bit as good as it has been in years past,” Oddfellow member John Paul Coonrod said. “In fact, we believe our recipe is about the best burgoo around.”
When asked about the price, Coonrod said that is “to be determined.”
“Due to the exaggerated fluctuation in the price of raw materials we have been seeing lately, we don’t know how much we are going to have to pay for the ingredients until we actually buy them,” he said. “Naturally, the Oddfellows does this burgoo in order to raise money for its charitable endeavors like scholarships and such, but we don’t know how much to charge in order to make that profit until we know how much it costs us to get all the stuff to make the burgoo.”
They will be selling it by the gallon or half gallon – there will be no individual bowls of burgoo sold.
“We prefer to sell it by the gallon, but if someone came in and only wanted a half gallon, we would sell them a half gallon,” Coonrod said. “We understand that maybe a single person might have a hard time using an entire gallon of it.”
Folks are reminded to also bring their own containers.
“We would ask everyone to please bring their own containers as well,” Coonrod said. “We typically have a few of our own containers around in case someone shows up and forgot theirs, but we would ask that everyone just bring their own as it just makes things easier.”
In case anyone wants to see just how burgoo is made, the Oddfellows will be setting up on the town square late Friday night where they will be cooking the burgoo and stirring the concoction in huge kettles over an open fire for at least 10 to 12 hours.
Coonrod says it is actually a fun experience.
“As far as spots go to cook burgoo, it’s a pretty fun spot,” he said. “Cooking up on the town square is a lot nicer than being tucked away in the corner of the fairgrounds simply because there is just a lot more going on.”
