The city of Pittsfield will spend and extra $50,000 in salaries this fiscal year after awarding the employees raises. The matter was discussed Tuesday, April 18, at the regular monthly meeting.
Full time hourly employees will receive 50 cents per hour for their cost of living raise and another raise for merit. Salaried employees will receive an additional $1,040.
Mike Starman, chief of police will have his salary switched to salaried, rather than hourly and will start at $68,020 per year. Shane Allen, utility superintendent will also become salaried with an annual income of $60,715 per years.
The mayor was given authority to negotiate with the deputy chief on a wage increase. All employees with comp time on the books will be paid at their hourly rate before they go to the salaried status.
Even with increases the city will spend less on labor this year than last. Wages will reduce from $1.5 million to $1.4 million.
The mayor announced the city employees would take part in a mock drill at Pikeland Community School.
“Our employees will assist in the case that might ever, God-Forbid, happen,” Gary Mendenhall, mayor said. “All available employees, even the office staff will help.”
Mendenhall also reminded everyone to get their golf cart sticker for the summer.
“We are constantly getting reports of individuals who have golf carts on the street without the proper sticker,” Mendenhall said. “Please get your stickers.”
The city also asked Mike Hollahan, city attorney, to draw up an ordinance making the intersection of Grant and Walnut, a one-way stop sign with traffic on Grant, pulling on the Walnut stopping and yielding to Walnut Street traffic will have no stop sign.
“That intersection has never made sense to me,” Mendenhall said.
The council also heard that Cass Communications is waiting on equipment and will soon be installing WiFi at the lake.
