The Winchester Music in the Park Summer Concert Series begins this Thursday, June 1, with a repeat performance by Tom Irwin, a local singer, songwriter, story teller and fan favorite.
“The first show this Thursday will coincide with a number of events sponsored by the Civic Group in town this weekend,” Civic Group member John Paul Coonrod said. “We would invite everyone come, bring a lawn chair, bring your children, if you have them and come and enjoy some music.”
Bring your appetite as well as there will be hamburgers and hot dogs available for purchase along with water and soda. Might be a good idea to bring some bug spray for the gnats as well.
The Music in the Park series will continue every Thursday night through the months of June and July.
“We have tried to have a mix of music every year from jazz to classical to the rock and roll that everyone knows to country to folk and blues,” Coonrod said. “And this year, I think we have accomplished being able to have that same mix, including the bluegrass, which is my favorite.”
Bringing the bluegrass music to Winchester will be Silver Creek, a very accomplished bluegrass band from the southern part of the state.
“They have come up and played for us before and they are excellent,” Coonrod said. “We are all looking forward to having them back.”
Also returning this year is Delta blues player Rev. Robert, who is also from the southern part of the state, which seems to produce a lot of really good musicians.
Another returning act is Kamen Petkovhe, a classical violinist who will have a new piano accompanist this year in Ed Clark.
“They will be playing mostly classical musical, a little bit of jazz and some of your more traditional standards,” Coonrod said. “They are very good.”
There will also be some new acts this year. On July 13 Vanessa Lively from the Lonestar state of Texas will make her way up to Illinois to perform. Lively is folk music artist.
Also new this year will be the band After School Special, which is an acoustic cover band.
All-in-all, the 2023 Music in the Park series looks to be an exciting place to be on Thursday night this summer.
