Eldred American Legion Post 1135 was the setting for the latest Quilt of Valor presentation. There were 12 local veterans presented these quilts on Saturday, June 3. Those honored were: Rex Cox, Gary Coates, Dan Howard, John Griswold, Barney Taylor, Randy Kinser, Bob Shannon, Bob Lake, Jon Baker, Dick Mehrhoff, Steve Lee and Roger Darr.
Nationally to date, there have been approximately 348,550 quilts awarded to veterans. This is a volunteer organization; from the hours spent sewing the blocks, putting the quilts together and sewing the backing, to the purchase of material. Their mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. The national organization is now twenty years old. (www.qovf.org)
Tri-County Quilters, (who is a member of the Quilts of Valor) among other volunteers, is the local group that spends countless hours making these quilts. Each quilt is sewn with love and respect for the veteran to whom it is presented, and each has a tag with the names of those who worked on that specific quilt, the honoree’s name, place and date presented.
Tri County Quilts of Valor is very grateful for donations received from Eldred American Legion, Tri County Honor Guard, White Hall Masonic Lodge, White Hall Lions Club, Carrollton Lions Club, Greenfield Lions Club, Eagle Land Title, White Hall Drag-O-Way Club, and many individual donors.
If there are any quilters that would like to donate their time (sewing blocks, piece, binding or long-arming), or for any monetary donations, please feel free to contact Rick Morris at 217-370-0973.
The next Quilt of Valor presentation is scheduled for Saturday, July 8, at the Hillview Café, Hillview, Illinois at 3 p.m. Ceremonies are open to the public.
