Winchester’s Terry Aossey participated in the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight this spring. He is shown in front of Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Memorial. This Saturday, July 29, the Julian Wells American Legion Post 442 and Winchester VFW are joining together to host a golf scramble at Plum Creek Golf Course in Winchester. All proceeds from the golf outing benefit the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
The Julian Wells American Legion Post 442 and Winchester VFW are joining together to host a golf scramble at Plum Creek Golf Course in Winchester.
The tournament will be July 29, and all proceeds will go to the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
According to Julian Well American Legion Post 442 Commander Matt Barber, he hopes that by supporting the Honor Flight, more veterans from the area will be able to participate in Honor Flights from Springfield to Washington D.C.
“We want to raise money for Land of Lincoln Honor Flight,” Barber said. “It’s a great way to recognize these guys.”
The mission of Land of Lincoln Honor Flight is to provide round trip transportation from Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield for veterans in order of their service (WWII, Korean Era and Vietnam Era) who wish to visit their memorials in Washington, D.C.
Barber said that Land of Lincoln Honor Flight is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many veterans to see the war memorials of Washington D.C., and the act of going on the honor flight can be therapeutic for veterans.
“All those monuments in Washington were built for these guys,” Barber said. “Visiting the monuments can be sort of a healing process, especially for Vietnam veterans that were treated poorly when they got home from the war.”
“The welcome home that the veterans receive at the airport when they return from the Honor Flight is also pretty special,” Barber said. “The airport is filled with people, and it can get pretty emotional for a bunch of guys that aren’t emotional.”
The event will be a 4-person scramble with morning (8 a.m.) and afternoon (1 p.m.) flights. Contact Sean Williams at Plum Creek Golf Course to register. The phone number is 217-742-9018.
The $350 entry fee covers carts and green fees, and there will be food to purchase as well.
There are still hole sponsorships available for individuals, organizations or businesses. The cost for a hole is $100. If interested in sponsoring a hole, contact Matt Barber at 217-939-8983.
