Spring Creek firefighters on the left, Pleasant Hill on the right. The two departments paired off Monday evening for a old-fashioned game of water barrel fighting. Even though it gave some of each department’s younger members some hose time, it was still more fun than it was training. For Spring Creek, Darren Workman and Tracy Jones handle the heavy load, while David Workman, kept the hose in line, giving the workers slack when they needed it and more hose as they pushed the barrel into the opponents territory. On the other side, Remington Winchell, Dawson Niffen, Ethan Meyer-Mowen.
The Pleasant Hill Fire Department hosted a training Monday night that turned into more fun than training.
The two departments brought back water barrel fighting. The sport was popular in this area during the late 70s, early 80s and there were a few events in the mid 90s.
The object is to attack the barrel which is located in the middle of a cable, about 20 feet in the air, with the water hose and push the barrel into the opponents territory and on to the marker using the pressure of the water.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Cory Winchell, Pleasant Hill fire chief and judge of the contests said. “It gives our younger guys a chance to get some hose time.”
The first four matches were evenly split between Spring Creek and Pleasant Hill, with several substitutions for each match.
