The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office issued a public notice on social media earlier this week addressing community concerns regarding a suspect at large following an incident in the early morning hours of Monday, May 6.
“We have received multiple calls requesting additional information involving suspects involved in last night’s incident which occurred near Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois,” the notice stated. “We would like to notify our residents that there is no imminent danger, nor is there a suspect at large. It was determined after review of camera footage that there was only one suspect, who was apprehended in the early morning hours of May 6th 2024, with assistance from a K9 handler from the Pike County Sheriff’s Department.”
Calhoun County Sheriff Bill Heffington said the incident began when a vehicle that was believed to have fled from a traffic stop in Jersey County was seen traveling at a high rate of speed through Hardin.
Deputies lost sight of the vehicle during a pursuit, but later found an overturned vehicle that matched the description and were able to locate the suspect.
Sheriff Heffington said more details will be available soon.
The Sheriff’s Office also reminded residents to keep their doors and vehicles locked should the event of a suspect at large occur.
“Although there is not currently a suspect at large, we would like to use this opportunity to remind folks to lock their doors and keep firearms and other valuables out of their vehicles.”
