Carrollton Public Library has a new sign to advertise upcoming events thanks to the City of Carrollton who installed the sign and Casey’s General Store who donated the sign when they moved into Carrollton two years ago and didn’t want the sign. The sign is there to advertise local events and advertise such things as boil orders, church events, etcetera. (Carmen Ensinger/Greene Prairie Press)

Anyone who has driven past the Carrollton Public Library has probably noticed the fancy LED sign in the side yard by now. The sign replaced the wood and glass Lion’s Club sign that had been there for decades.
Carrollton city workers got the sign installed and operational just in time to advertise the Greene County Fair. The sign was donated to the city by Casey’s.
Back when Casey’s bought out Buck’s Crossing, at a Carrollton City Council meeting, Public Works Director Steve Rosentreter told the council that Casey’s had asked him if the city was interested in taking the sign since they were going to just throw it away. The council agreed it would be nice to have the sign and they finally got it installed.
Librarian Angie Custer couldn’t be more thrilled.
“I have wanted one of these signs for the longest time to be able to communicate announcements on behalf of the city and the library,” she said. “So, when this sign became available and Dwayne (City Alderman Freand) asked about putting it in place of the Lion’s sign, everyone was all for it.”
The old Lion’s sign had more than served its purpose.
“The Lion’s sign had those big glass panels that they had to lift up to expose the area where you put the letters in and it was very heavy and it was becoming such a chore to spend the time trying to change the letters out,” Custer said. “The Lions Club members that had the time to do it were older, so it was hard on them to lift the panel and sometimes they didn’t have enough letters. So, we agreed that it would be useful and the city installed it for us.”
Since it was installed at the end of May, Custer said she has been using it for such things like advertising hydrant flushing, the Greene County Fair, a blood drive, several church events and the city wide yard sales.
“I really hope it will be beneficial to everyone,” Custer said. “I am really excited to have this way to be able to communicate things to everyone in the community. We are trying to get everything on it we can.”
The possibilities are endless as to what can be put on the sign because they are programmed into a computer.
“The coolest thing of all is that I can actually schedule when an event is going to run,” Custer said. “Let’s say you have an event in August and you give me the announcement now. I can schedule your event to run the week of your event now. Kind of set it and forget it.”
When an event is over, it automatically drops off the schedule when it expires. Animations can also be added.
“It has been a lot of fun looking through the animations, but we want to be very careful what we put out there as far as animations go,” Custer said. “We are trying to be very simple since we are right next to an intersection because we don’t want it to be too distracting. We want it to be clearly visible and be able to be read quickly.”
