The Hidden Honey Marketplace and Workshop in Winchester is buzzing with a new way to teach kids the importance of creativity while raising money for a good cause. Owner Kelsey Mayner is looking forward to bringing kids of all ages together to learn this summer through The Kids Art Camp she has planned.
“I am so excited for the rest of the summer,” she said. “We have so many fun workshops.”
For once a week in June and July, children from ages 7-15 will have the opportunity to create using string art, doing mosaic projects, assembling hats and keychains and even painting classic cars. Hidden Honey will sponsor a children’s car show on July 20 during the Winchester Car Show on the Town Square, Mayner said.
“Viewers will get to vote on the best in show and there will be prizes for cars that get the most votes.”
The biggest goal of the Art Camp is to have an outlet for kids to have the chance to be creative, promote self esteem, self expression and connect with other kids, she said.
“I wanted to use this as a chance to teach kids that giving back to your community is essential and important but it can also be fun.”
Mayner said this will be her first experience with providing a learning environment like the workshops.
“I have never done anything like this, so it’s a huge learning curve for me,” she said, adding that working with children is an important investment in the community.
Some proceeds from the workshop will go toward The Outreach Centers’ Annual Back to School Bash at the end of the summer. This will be the fourteenth year for the event, where families are supplied with back to school essentials, dinner and acitivities.
“Reaching out to meet the needs in our community takes more than just one person and one organization,” Mayner said. “I want my business to be part of helping with those needs.”
Marsha Mayner, who owns and operates the Outreach Center, will be assisting with the workshops.
Small business owners who sell their products in her store will also be helping with some of the workshops, like Courtney Miller and Jen Suter who sell childrens’ boutique and luxury leather items, respectively.
The Art Camp will be held at Hidden Honey on Friday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. ending with the Car Show on July 20, with the exception of July 5.
Each class is $40 with a 10 percent discount if signing up for the remainder of the summer.
“I’ll be posting a link on Hidden Honey Marketplace and Workshop’s Facebook Page each week,” Mayner said.
Each class can be registered for the day of, with the exception of July 12 or 19, for which materials will need to be pre-ordered.
