The Winchester Car Show on the Square will be held this Saturday, July 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This photo shows Winchester Car Show on the Square founder Terry Aossey showing off his 1940 Chevrolet.
The Winchester Car Show on the Square will be held this Saturday, July 20, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Event organizer Terry Aossey has come to expect a good turnout of Midwestern car enthusiasts as participants and attendees during the annual event.
“We always have a good turnout,” Aossey said of the number of registrants in the car show. “We’ll break 100, easy. We usually have between 100 and 200 cars. We bring them in from Missouri and some from Iowa and a lot of locals.”
Aossey’s passion for cars is what first got the Winchester Car Show on the Square started.
“I’ve always been a car buff,” Aossey said. “I’ve had old cars since high school. I had three cars before I turned 16.”
While Aossey originally started the car show because of his love of classic cars, a primary goal of the car show, Aossey has said, is to highlight the positive changes that have taken place around downtown Winchester recently – including new businesses and aesthetic/infrastructure improvements.
“We promote the new businesses and the new sidewalks, curbs and lighting,” Aossey said.
Aossey said that the car show is one of the largest events around the square to occur all year.
Attendees, according to Aossey, can expect a variety of food and shopping opportunities around the square during the show.
“We do a poker walk to encourage people to get into the shops,” Aossey said.
In addition, a number of groups and businesses will be serving refreshments during the car show.
“The PEO ladies will be doing lemonade shake ups,” Aossey said. “The Methodist men will have pork chops. The bowling alley will have burgers and brats. Nobody will leave hungry”
A highlight of each year’s car show is the collectible tee shirt designed by Open House Print Shop.
Aossey said that many tee shirts had already been sold ahead of the car show. Tee shirts are available for purchase the day of the car show for $20.
“We’ve already sold 60 or 70 shirts,” Aossey said.
In addition, a 50/50 drawing will be held that day.
Proceeds from all fundraising efforts, according to Aossey, are funneled back to community improvement activities.
“It all goes back to the community,” Aossey said.
A new feature of this year’s car show is a back-to-school supply drive in front of the Outreach Community Center. Attendees are encouraged to pack a classic car full of school supplies, which will be distributed to families by the Outreach Community Center.
“One of Mark Ford’s old cars will be parked out front of the Outreach Community Center,” Aossey said. “Folks will pack the car with school supplies.”
Another new feature of this year’s car show will be model cars painted by children at Hidden Honey Marketplace & Workshop.
“The kids will be painting the cars at a workshop at Hidden Honey on Thursday,” Aossey said. “The cars will be displayed and judged on the day of the car show.”
