The Village of Alsey was a flurry of activity for the community’s annual burgoo celebration on Saturday.
The theme of this year’s burgoo was “Unleash Your Superhero,” and the event’s main stage was adorned with large paintings of well-known superheroes and comic book characters – including The Flash, Captain America, Thor, Spiderman, The Hulk, Batman, Superman, and Wonderwoman.
Many locals were up early to beat the heat and get in on burgoo kettle service that commenced at 6:30 a.m.
Alsey Burgoo Parade participants lined up in front of Alsey Refractories Company and made their way along the village’s parade route starting at 10 a.m.
The parade consisted of vehicles from several fire departments and law enforcement agencies, members of Julian Wells Post 442 of the American Legion, the Winchester High School marching band, West-Central cheerleaders, West-Central dance team members, employees from Alsey Refractories, and participants competing in the burgoo’s pageants.
There was also a float featuring children dressed as superheroes riding with military veterans.
Following the parade, attendees took in a performance by the Winchester drumline on the main stage and watched the burgoo pageants.
Another feature of this year’s Alsey Burgoo was a special performance by ventriloquist Doug Mickan and his comical puppets. Mickan is a worship pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Festus, Mo.
To end the event, the winners of the Alsey Burgoo pageants were recognized. Miss Alsey 2024 was Marissa Galloway. 2024 Junior Miss Alsey was Norah Kuchy. 2024 Little Miss Alsey was Carly Schnelten.
