Christopher R. Hoyt to present “Family & Charitable Planning for Retirement Accounts plus Tax-Smart Giving Strategies”
Attorneys, financial planners, accountants, and other professional advisors who work with charitably-inclined individuals are invited to attend a free charitable planning seminar on August 28 hosted by the Community Foundation. The seminars, focused on tax-smart giving strategies, will be presented by Christopher R. Hoyt, Professor of Law at University of Missouri Kansas City School of Law.
The seminar will be held at the Quincy Country Club from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 11 a.m. A complimentary lunch will be served.
“Our region is filled with incredibly generous individuals who give because they care deeply about their communities,” said Catherine Bocke Meckes, Community Foundation CEO. “But, there are ways to maximize that generosity. Equipping local advisors for these conversations positively impacts our nonprofit community. The more we can work together to grow charitable assets for our community, the better and stronger our region will be.”
The program will present the rules and planning implications for required distributions from retirement accounts considering the 2022 proposed regulations and the SECURE 2.0 legislation and examine the rights that spouses have in each other’s retirement assets, including the different rules that can apply in Illinois and in Missouri. The program will additionally describe tax-saving strategies for charitable gifts, including “bunching” gifts with donor advised funds and making qualified charitable distributions from IRAs. It will also explain the new Illinois Gives 25% tax credit for donations to endowed funds at Illinois community foundations that will take effect in 2025.
Seminar participants are eligible for continuing education credits, including 2.0 MCLE credits in Illinois and 2.2 in Missouri and 2.0 CTFA credits in both Illinois and Missouri.
