The Scott County Health Department (SCHD) recently held an informational meeting in the Winchester Grade School gymnasium. The purpose of the meeting was to publicize a free after school program the Department plans to initiate after Labor Day. A location and start date for The Teen Reach After School Program, which begins on Wednesday, Sept. 4, was selected. Scott County students from ages 6-17 are invited to join the program every week day in the Home Economics Room at Winchester High School.
Daily attendance is not required and the program is free of charge which is the result of funding from a grant the Health Department received for the purpose of enriching the lives of children and teens during unsupervised hours during the day. Hours will be Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday beginning at 3:30-5:30 p.m. with Wednesday beginning at 2:30-5:30 p.m. and guardians may pick students up on the East side of the building. Non-school attendance days and summer hours are to be determined. The Health Department will supply a monthly schedule of those details on a monthly basis.
The program is geared toward older youth and at least 70% of the participants must be in the age 11-17 age range. If there is more interest in the 6-10 year old range, coordinators will consider opening the program to more students for a small fee per student.
Services included in the program include academic performance help, life skills education, recreation and sports, cultural and artistic activities just to name a few. The program will be supervised by former Winchester School District Art Education teacher MacKenzie Gieske who will be joined by helpers or “mentors.”
Participants need not attend every day or for the duration of the program. The program is open to those who are both involved and not involved in afterschool activities and all are invited to stop by the Home Ec Room for a snack and homework help. For questions on more details and how to register your child call the Health Department at 217-742-8203 or email Mackenzie Gieske at [email protected].
