The JWCC Ag Alumni Association 21st Annual Livestock Judging Contest will be held on Friday, September 20th at the Fred L. Bradshaw Learning Center at the JWCC Ag Center outside of Perry.
The event is open to high school students who wish to hone their skills for a future career in agriculture and takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the 20th.
Participant check-in will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on the day of the contest. Instructions and welcome will follow and the contest will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 1:00 p.m. with the official placing results.
Registrations for the contest must be received from participating schools/FFA Clubs by Tuesday, September 17.
JWCC Livestock Judging Team Coach and Ag faculty member Justin Lewis said that he anticipates hundreds of entrants from schools throughout Missouri and Illinois.
“We’re trying for around 450 students,” Lewis said. “Schools need to be registered by the Tuesday before the contest, so that’s the 17th.”
The JWCC livestock judging contest has grown in popularity along with competitive livestock judging in Illinois and across the nation.
In fact, last year’s JWCC Ag Alumni Livestock Judging Contest set a record for the number of participants.
“I think this was our biggest one to date,” former JWCC Agriculture Department Director Mike Tenhouse said following last year’s contest. “We had over 480 registered to participate.”
Tenhouse said that the event drew participants from dozens of high schools across Missouri and Illinois.
“I think we had 32 high schools from Illinois and Missouri represented this year,” Tenhouse said.
Tenhouse stated that he has received positive responses about the competition from several teachers and FFA advisors.
“The high school advisors always tell us they appreciate having the contest here at John Wood each fall,” Tenhouse said.
The event is sponsored by ADM Alliance Nutrition and Moorman’s ShowTec and hosted by John Wood Agriculture Alumni Association and Livestock Evaluation Club. Evaluation will be of various species, including cattle, swine, sheep and goats.
During the contest, students will be judged on their ability to accurately evaluate one class of each species by answering ten questions about the differences observed in the class. The official judges will present the correct placings and provide learning opportunities for the students following the competition.
