The Fishing and Night Hike Owl Program at Pere Marquette State Park is returning this fall with hikes on Friday, Oct. 4, and Friday, Nov. 1.
The free event will give families an opportunity to learn about fish, fishing, and the different owl species that live in Illinois from Urban Fishing Coordinator Scott Isringhausen.
After learning about the different fish and getting a chance to check out the Urban Fishing Trailer, families will get a
chance to fish in the Bluegill Pond before moving into the visitor center to learn about the eight different species of owls that live in Illinois. From there, the families will start the two-mile hike while stopping along the way to call and spot owls.
Once the hike is completed, families will get a chance to refuel on some refreshments and roast some hotdogs and marshmallows.
Isringhausen said the event is very family-oriented and is a great chance to learn more about fishing, enjoy the trails of Pere Marquette at night, and check out the lights of St. Charles from the overlook.
No reservations are required for the free program. The fish and fishing portion of the night will start at 5:30 p.m., the owl program at the visitor center will begin at 7:30 p.m., the hike takes about two hours and the evening typically concludes around 10:30 p.m.
Portions of the night hike are up-hill so families are encouraged to wear good walking shoes, dress for the weather, use bug spray, and bring one flashlight per family.
