St. Francis Holy Ghost students received a lesson in science, faith, career and vocation from Sister Pieta Keller.
St. Francis Holy Ghost Catholic School in Jerseyville, IL was visited by Sister Pieta Keller who is a religious Sister (aka “Nun”) who is a part of the Alton-based religious community the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George. She is also a biomedical engineer, completing her Bachelor of Science degree at Purdue University. She combines her divine calling to her faith with a career as an innovation engineer with OSF HealthCare. She came to St. Francis Holy Ghost Catholic School to explain to the 5th-8th grade classes about how she utilizes her God-given scientific and technical aptitude to help people in need. Sister Pieta explained to the students “I truly feel that God has placed me here. He led me to choose a field that allows me to pursue my love of engineering, in addition to answering His call to serve Him. This work combines to positively affect people’s lives every day,” Sister Pieta works primarily in Peoria IL in her role at the OSF Innovation Jump Simulation and Education Center. Sister Pieta’s work involves the creation of 3D-models of internal organs and systems as well as utilizing virtual reality applications to help surgeons in preoperative planning. She brought examples of some of her work and allowed the students to examine them up close. She explained how they use CT Scans and X-rays to make these accurate 3-D models. She also works on the creation of medical task trainers for surgeons to learn and practice on before they care for patients.
Sister Pietra answered students’ questions about her vocation as a nun. She explained how her faith life and her career work together seamlessly to answer God’s call to serve.
