Alan Probst, owner of the North American Trapper company, strives to promote and educate people on sound trapping principles. He recently visited Sauer Farms in Riggston for his YouTube series detailing just that.
According to his website, www.northamericantrapper.com, Probst grew up in a family of hunters and outdoorsmen in Pennsylvania where he still resides. The mission of his company is to offer education about responsible and ecological ways to trap animals.
Trapping is a method of capturing wildlife using devices that restrain animals without the need for constant human presence. The method can be used for a variety of reasons, including rodent control and obtaining fur.
This was his fourth visit to the Sauer farm and he’s known the Sauer family for as many years. “I saw a post from Jenny on raccoon trouble and I reached out to offer my help,” he said. “That was four years ago and I’ve been back every year.”
“We mainly needed traps for raccoons, since they cause damage to farm related equipment and crops,” Sauer-Schmidgall said, adding that they’ve also been able to catch opossums, skunks and coyotes. The two agree that Alan’s visits lately are more of social nature, saying that Probst feels more like family than anything. “It’s more of a yearly reunion now for the whole family,” he said. “The raccoons are secondary.”
When Probst visited earlier this month he brought along a camera crew to do some filming for his television series at the Sauer Farm. “I’ve filmed all over the country so it’s a good fit for what I do here in the Midwest.” He said his company has produced over 800 original episodes of his show for national television along with 250 YouTube segments.
He has been selling his products at Grab ‘n’ Grow Greenhouse since it opened. “I have a Meat Stick and Specialty division in my company and I thought the store would be a good fit for exotic meat for her clientele,” he said. The meats available at the store include 1 oz Wild Boar, Water Buffalo, Alligator, Ostrich and Antelope sticks. “They make great snacks as well as stocking stuffers this time of year,” he said, adding that the store also carries Kangaroo meat sticks, which he said are a very healthy protein.
