The West Central eighth graders will play for third place tonight at the state tournament. The girls played Saturday and dominated McNabb Putman County. In the second game of the day, the team met the stingy defense of Carthage and fell to the Hancock County team. Team members are, front row, left to right, Kinsey Rose, Milli Maynard, Kilynn Orris, Caroline Smith, Hallie Pierceall, Isabella Lovekamp and Brynn Evans. Carthage allowed just four second half points and beat West Central 29-15 in the semifinals of the IESA 8-2A Girls’ Basketball State Tournament Dec. 14 in Havana.
The Cougars fell to 25-2 and will play Bloomington Corpus Christi (17-6) in the third-place game Thursday at 6 p.m. Carthage improved to 21-5.
Carthage led 13-11 at halftime and outscored West Central 7-0 in the third quarter. They led 21-11 early in the fourth quarter.
Evynn Gregory scored West Central’s first points of the second half with 5:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. Mie Sievers got a steal and scored to narrow the deficit to 21-15 with 4:54 remaining in the game.
Carthage scored the last eight points of the game to seal the win.
Ellie Wahl scored four points, and the Cougars led 4-2 in the first quarter. Carthage got a basket at the buzzer to tie the game.
Jackie Lashmett scored as West Central led 8-6 in the second. Carthage got a three-point basket to take the lead, but Lashmett made a free throw to tie the game at 9.
Carthage got another three-point basket and a free throw and led 13-9. Jada Lawson scored late in the quarter, and the Cougars trailed just 13-11 at halftime.
Lashmett scored five points for West Central, and Wahl scored four. Gregory, Lawson and Sievers each scored two points.
