The North Greene Athletic Department announced recently that Nicholas Mellenthin will be the new head football coach for the Spartans next year.
His hiring comes on the heels of the resignation last fall of Pudge VanMeter as the Spartan head coach.
His resignation and the fact that the head coaching position was open, brought out plenty of candidates willing to take on the task.
“We had a total of nine applicants apply for this position,” Superintendent Jacky Kuchy said. “The board had a lot of different talent to choose from.”
Mellenthin is a graduate of Bunker Hill High School. He began his coaching career at his alma mater in 2011.
In addition to coaching at Bunker Hill, he has also filled the role of assistant coach at Staunton and Edwardsville where he was the Junior Varsity Offensive Coordinator and the Varsity Running Backs coach.
Mellenthin has spent the last two seasons as the Offensive Coordinator at Casey Westfield, where the team achieved a record of 19-4 during those two seasons.
“We are excited for the addition of Coach Mellenthin,” Kuchy said. “We look forward to the impact he will make for our football program and the contributions he can provide for our North Greene student athletes.”
