Word quickly spread through the entire Calhoun and surrounding communities last week of the loss of Pittsfield Lady Saukees basketball player Reese Ramsey following a traffic accident. Everyone felt the hurt for her family, friends, fellow classmates and teammates. A bright shining basketball star whose life ended way too soon.
Due to road conditions from inclement weather Calhoun had a remote learning day Wednesday but Wednesday evening a Facebook post on the Calhoun Unit 40 page and messages on Class Dojo told students and staff that Thursday students and staff would wear red to show love and support for their neighbors in the Pikeland School District. The post was shared by many and the “Warrior Way” became “Saukee Strong.”
Students and staff at Calhoun High, Jr. High, and Elementary, Brussels, St. Mary’s and St. Norbert’s all got involved. As well as many Calhoun businesses that employees wore their red. Brussels Unit 42 showed their love and support on Valentine’s Day.
Calhoun schools were not the only district to become “Saukee Strong.” Over 50 schools throughout rural Illinois all had similar posts showing their support and love for Pikeland.
“Our hearts are heavy as we learn of the heartbreaking loss of a student and two other students who suffered injuries from a tragic accident in our neighboring district. In times like these, words often fall short, but please know that our thoughts are with the family, friends and all those who are grieving. It’s essential that we come together as one to support each other and provide love, support and strength in moments like these.” Calhoun High Principal Christie Lorsbach said.
