Camp Point Central outscored West Central in each of the first three quarters and beat the Cougars 48-33 in the first round of the IESA 8-2A Boys’ Basketball State Tournament Feb. 15 at Kankakee.
The Cougars finished their season 20-4. Camp Point Central (23-3) beat Midwest Central 43-38 later in the day and advanced to the state championship game.
Camp Point Central scored the first four points of the game before Blaine Vortman scored for West Central. Camp Point Central would extend its lead to 7-2.
Vortman scored again to cut the margin to 7-4. Camp Point Central scored the next four points and increased its lead to 11-4.
Thrice Kirkpatrick made two free throws and cut the margin to 11-6. Camp Point Central, however, scored seven straight points and take an 18-6 lead.
Vortman made a free throw to cut the margin to 18-7. He made a long three-point shot at the buzzer, and the Cougars trailed 18-10 after one quarter.
Camp Point Central led 19-10 early in the second. Kirkpatrick scored five straight points to get West Central within 19-15.
Emerson Little made a three-point basket, and West Central trailed 24-18 late in the second quarter. Camp Point Central made three free throws with less than a second remained, and they led 27-17 at halftime.

Vortman scored 16 points to lead the Cougars. Kirkpatrick scored nine points. Emerson Little scored six points, and Jackson Little scored two.
