Former longtime Carrollton football head coach Nick Flowers was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame at a banquet held Saturday, March 29 in Champaign.
An alumni of Carrollton High School and Monmouth College where he played football, Flowers returned to Carrollton as head coach after assistant coach stints at Piasa Southwestern and North Greene High Schools.
The Hawks qualified for the IHSA playoffs 14 of the 18 years that Coach Flowers was the head coach. This resulted in 10 WIVC South conference championships. Seven of these championships were consecutive in years.
Carrollton also achieved their first state quarterfinal appearance as well as two IHSA State Runner-up trophies in 2014 and 2021. His 2014 team was undefeated in the regular season and just missed being perfect by falling to Foreston in the championship game.
Coach Flowers was selected eight times as small school Coach of the Year by the Jacksonville Journal-Courier and the Alton Telegraph newspapers.
An outstanding member of the Carrollton community, Coach Flowers has been awarded the Lions Club Leadership Award and mentored several youth football teams in both Carrollton and nearby Jerseyville.
He has been proud to coach 12 All-State football players and has had 10 players go on to play college football. He also has had a Major League Baseball player Sam Coonrod play for him.
In addition to presenting at dozens of football coaching clinics and serving on several all star selection committees, Coach Flowers has served Carrollton High School as an Interim Athletic Director and the Lead Teacher in the absence of a Principal.
Now, Coach Nick Flowers joins the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame Coaches that he coached against including Dan Bowman, Stan Weinke, BJ Zelznick, Mark Dodd, Darrin Winklet, Josh Jostes, Kirk Brandenburg, Ric Arand, Rich Thompson and Don Flowers in the IHSFCA.
