LINDA HOSKINS
Recently I tried a new recipe for Baked Pizza Wraps that was simple to make and turned out pretty good. It’s very easy to adapt to your own tastes. When I made this, I was expecting to pick them up to eat, but that was too messy. I added only pepperoni when I made these, but next time I will add some sauteed onion and green pepper. This recipe would be easy to make for one person or for a whole family.
BAKED PIZZA WRAPS
■ fajita tortilla shells
■ pizza sauce
■ Mozzarella cheese sticks
■ pizza toppings of choice
■ several Tbsp melted butter
■ garlic powder
■ herb seasonings such as basil and or oregano
Spread 1 to 2 Tbsp pizza sauce over each tortilla. Add a cheese stick and any pizza toppings you like. Roll up, place seam side down in a greased baking dish. Melt butter, add garlic powder and herbs. Pour over the wraps. Bake uncovered at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.
Serve extra pizza sauce on side for dipping if desired.
After making this, I got to thinking about pepperoni. I love it on my pizza and eat it right out of the bag. But what is it really? Pepperoni is a spicy American salami. it’s usually made with pork and beef and seasoned with chili peppers and paprika. It’s the paprika that gives pepperoni its bright red color. You would be correct if you guessed that pepperoni is the most popular pizza topping in the U.S. According to one website I looked at, over 450 million pounds of pepperoni goes into making pizzas in the United States every year. That’s just for pizzas. Think of all the other uses for pepperoni–calzones, salads, snacking, etc.
Did you catch what I said in the first sentence about pepperoni? While pepperoni might seem like an Italian meat, it actually originated here in the U.S. around 1919, first made by Italian American immigrants in New York City.
Pepperoni even has its own day. September 20 is National Pepperoni Day! Be sure to mark that on your calendar so you can celebrate!
