A 40-year-old Wilsonville man was taken into custody last week after a string of burglaries in Calhoun County and Pike County.
Casey W. Sobberi, of Wilsonville, is facing multiple charges in both Calhoun and Pike counties following a series of burglaries to local businesses, including the Jiffi Stop in Pleasant Hill, Flowers By Glenda in Kampsville, and Michael Tavern in Michael.
Law enforcement was notified of the burglaries in the early morning hours of Monday, June 9, and discovered breached entryways as well as missing merchandise and a stolen cash register.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and Pike County Sheriff’s Office began a joint investigation and also contacted the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit.
“The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Pike County Sheriff’s Department then began a joint investigation into the string of burglaries and notified neighboring agencies; most notably, the Jersey County Sheriff’s Department; which also began taking an active role in this investigation,” The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “Over the course of this investigation, search warrants were drafted, surveillance was analyzed, and additional evidence was recovered by the Jersey County Sheriff’s Department.”
According to a news release, a critical development came from Detective Sally Arbuthnot with the Jersey County Sheriff’s Office whose work led to the identification of the suspect vehicle’s owner. Pike County Chief Deputy Zack Orr was then able to identify the person operating the vehicle during the burglaries, with support from the Gillespie Police Department.
On Thursday, June 12, law enforcement was able to obtain a court-authorized search warrant and officers from Macoupin, Pike and Calhoun counties executed the search warrant that afternoon which led to Sobberi’s arrest.
Although Sobberi was on mandatory supervised release from the Illinois Department of Correction, the Department of Corrections declined to assist or issue a parole warrant.
“Due to policy and procedure restrictions with the Illinois Department of Corrections, they did not assist in the apprehension or detention of Sobberi,” a press release stated.
Sobberi was lodged at Pike County Jail with multiple charges from each county.
In Calhoun, he faces two counts of burglary, two counts of theft and two counts of criminal damage to property over $500.
In Pike, he faces one count of burglary, one count of theft, one count of criminal damage to property over $500 and one count of unlawful possession of burglary tools.
“We would like to sincerely thank the Illinois State Police, Pike County Sheriff’s Department, Jersey County Sheriff’s Department, Gillispie Police Department, Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bond County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the identification and apprehension of the suspect. This arrest could have never been possible without the cooperation shown between all agencies involved,” the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office stated.
