Sheriff Rob McMillen announces upcoming retirement

By Carmen Ensinger

After four terms in office, Greene County Sheriff Rob McMillen has announced his retirement, effective Nov. 30, 2026 – the end of his current term.

McMillen started his career in law enforcement in 1990 with the White Hall Police Department, serving as the White Hall Chief of Police from 1992 until 2010.

“In 2010, I ran for the office of Greene County Sheriff and was elected to the position,” McMillen said. “At the end of my term, I will have served four consecutive terms at the end of next year. This ties the record set by former Greene County Sheriff Mike Fry, who served from 1990 until 2006.”

McMillen said it has been a distinct honor and privilege to have served the citizens of Greene County for the past 35 years.

“Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege to have worked side by side with some of the finest men and women in this profession,” he said. “I have been blessed with the opportunity to lead our local law enforcement agencies through many challenges and changes that we have experienced, but none more challenging than navigating through the Safe-T-Act and the impact it has on our communities.”

McMillen has plenty of things lined up for his retirement.

“I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life, which will involve spending more time with family, especially our granddaughter,” he said. “We also plan to do some traveling and I want to stay active in the community. I will also be grateful for the support that the citizens of Greene County have shown me.”

McMillen is lending his support to his Chief Deputy, who has thrown his hat in the ring to be the next Greene County Sheriff.

“My Chief Deputy, Cale Hoesman will be vying for my position in the 2026 election and there isn’t a more qualified candidate to fill my position than him,” he said. “He has the experience and knowledge to continue on what I have established, but also move the Sheriff’s Office forward in a positive direction.”
