Who knows how long it has been since Greene County had a real presence on the World Wide Web – but they do now. And, it is informative, easy to navigate and if the creator has anything to do with it, will be updated on a regular basis and be a one-stop shop for all one’s local information.
Billy Springman, a 20 year old intern with the Greene County Board and a Carrollton native is leading efforts to boost public awareness and usage of Greene County’s newly launched official website, which can be found at greenecountyil.org.
Springman, who has become a valued asset to the County Board, talked to the Board earlier this year about overseeing the development of a modern, centralized website aimed at enhancing access to county services and information.
Springman said he spent months collaborating with the different county staff and offices within the courthouse so he could highlight just what those offices do.
For example, not only does the new website list the duties of the office of the County Clerk and Recorder, but it also allows one to order vital records online, apply for a marriage license, inquire about property tax and even gives online election results, plus a few other items of interest thrown in for good measure.
The office of the Circuit Clerks gives out just as much valid information, such as how to pay a ticket online, or make any other payment online. It also offers a brief tutorial on courtroom etiquette.
The link to the Sheriff’s Office highlights the Sheriff’s duties and gives a breakdown of the Greene County Jail, its visiting hours, etc.
There are also important links contained such as the Sex Offender Registry, allowing anyone to see if an individual has been put on the sex offender registry. Gun owners will appreciate the link to the State of Illinois Firearm Owners Identification registry to apply for a FOID card online.
Or, if they have already applied, they can check the status of their application as well as renew their card, change a name or address, report a lost or stolen or damaged FOID card plus many more links of interest.
The Treasurer’s Office link allows you to view and pay your property taxes at a number of local banks or from the comfort of your easy chair in your living room through propertytaxonline.org. This link also gives information about tax sales.
Additional links provide information on CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), provides information for submitted a Freedom of Information Act Request, provides a link to contact the Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator, link to the Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society as well as the public libraries in the county and the Veterans Assistance Commission, committed to supporting veterans and their families by providing access to a variety of services.
Springman presented the website to the County Board in March and they readily approved its creation and information shared therein.
“They tasked me with creating a sort of ‘digital hub’ for Greene County residents designed to improve transparency and streamline services,” Springman said. “It allows users to pay property taxes, court fines and traffic tickets, request vital records such as marriage and death certificates and even view live election results.”
Additionally, residents can find County Board meeting minutes, office hours and contact information for county officials.
“Now that we have gone online, my goal is to make it known that we have this information out there for everyone to see,” Springman said. “I have been distributing the link, seeking community feedback and exploring outreach strategies to ensure that residents know what resources are available.”
