One’s life can change in the blink of an eye; one phone call can alter the course one has planned out and make future dreams seem impossible. Instead of looking to the future, one is faced with the here and now – with the future sometimes looking rather bleak.
That is usually when friends and family step up to help with what seems like an insurmountable task ahead.
Those friends and family are planning a benefit for Carrollton resident Chris Webb at the American Legion on Sunday, Aug. 10 at the Eldred American Legion beginning at 11 a.m. with all the proceeds going directly to Webb to help with his medical expenses.
Webb, 53, was admitted to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis on June 22 where he was diagnosed with acute Myeloid Leukemia on June 26.
He was immediately started on chemotherapy the following day, June 27 and has spent the last five weeks on those treatments, which consisted of seven days of chemo, followed by three days rest and repeat. He was released to come home on July 25.
Webb was welcomed home by his wife, Heather, and their children, Bryce and Halle, and Heather says the entire family is very thankful for the support they have received so far.
“All we have ever asked for is prayers for Chris,” she said. “But what we have received was so much more. The prayers and support from our small community and beyond is very overwhelming.”
The benefit on Aug. 10 will include a free-will offering for a meal of pulled pork and multiple sides and deserts. Market on Main in Carrollton has donated the food and their services to help in Chris’ fight.
But that is only the beginning. A 50/50 drawing will be held as well as a silent auction. They are still collecting items for this auction and anyone wishing to donate items for this auction may drop the items by the Carrollton Public Library during business hours through Thursday, Aug. 7. One may also contact Peggy Clough or Laura Moss to get the items picked up.
There are also collection buckets out at several businesses in Carrollton and Jerseyville. In Carrollton, there is a donation bucket at Lone Oak Golf Course, The Levee, LaCrosse Lumber, Market on Main and the Carrollton Laundry and Lounge. In Jerseyville, they are at Sinclair Foods, Marshall Chevrolet and Sydenstricker Nobbe John Deere. The buckets were donated by LaCrosse Lumber.
One can also show their support for Chris by purchasing a t-shirt from the Cubbyhole in Carlinville. The t-shirts are ordered directly through the Cubbyhole online or by phone and the cost is $25 for small through extra-large. Larger sizes are available up to 4x for a slightly higher charge.
The shirts can be picked up at the benefit on Aug. or they are offering pickups on Aug. 8 in Carrollton at 6 p.m. at the Dairy Bar and in Jerseyville at Sydenstricker Nobbe John Deere at 4 p.m.
All donations are appreciated and all proceeds will be given to the Webb family to help offset their expenses during this difficult time.
“We appreciate everything everyone has done and offered to do and we hope to ‘pay it forward’ when Chris wins his battle with Leukemia,” Webb said. “The words ‘thank you’ will never feel like enough to show our appreciation, but for now we thank you and love you all.”
