While most health insurance premiums are skyrocketing, Carrollton School District considers itself lucky in that they are only looking at a moderate increase next year.
At the July 21 regular meeting, school board members approved a six percent increase in their health insurance premiums through Assured Partners.
“We met with their representative a few weeks ago and they gave us a rundown of what the renewal for next year looked like,” Carrollton Superintendent Jason Bauer said. “We ended up going with the six percent increase in the health insurance premiums with some changes to the prescription drug benefits.”
Bauer said one thing that will be affected is the cost of the new weight loss drugs.
“Those are going to go up a little bit in price,” Bauer said. “But, overall a six percent increase is not a bad place to land at all.”
The board also approved an intergovernmental agreement with Lewis and Clark Community College (LLCC).
“I met with their Workforce Training Coordinator who said that they had received a grant and they are looking at recruiting either high school age or older adults to take a course that would help prepare them to take the paraprofessional exam,” Bauer said. “That will help them go on to become paraprofessionals.”
“The Memorandum of Understanding we signed allows them to use one of our facilities in the evenings to teach the class if they need it,” Bauer said. “It also allows them to put observers who are interested in becoming paraprofessionals in our buildings as well. “
Bauer said any observer that would be put in a classroom would be subject to a criminal background check, paid for by LLCC.
“Anytime we can try to increase the pipeline of paraprofessionals or even teachers, that is always a good thing,” he said. “It is one way to try to get more people interested in becoming a part of the educational system.”
The board approved one-year contracts for Steve Caselton, Transportation and Maintenance Supervisor and Krista Flatt as the Early Childhood Supervisor. Both are already employed by the district in their respective positions.
Also approved was an addendum to the superintendent’s contract. This addendum assigns the duties of assistant principal at the grade school to Bauer in addition to his regular superintendent duties.
Substitute teachers working for the district next year will see an increase in pay after the board unanimously voted to increase the pay of substitute teachers from $110 a day to $120 a day.
