Lady Warriors start season with win in Roxana

The Calhoun Lady Warriors returned to the court this week for this year’s volleyball season.The Warriors started the season off with a win Monday at the Roxana tournament.
Calhoun faced off against East Alton Wood River, Valmeyer and Auburn securing a win in all three match ups.
“We had a strong start with winning all three pool games,” Coach Melissa Zipprich said. “We started beating East Alton Wood River 25-17 and 25-11. It was a little bit of a slow start, but we need a little time to knock the dust off from last season.”
Annie Wilson led the net against East Alton Wood River with seven kills followed by Camryn Klaas with five and Stella Gress with four. Gress also served aces and Sadie Kiel added three.
The girls took a 25–10 and a 25–2 win against Valmeyer with Mary Squier serving six aces and Lily Pelletier serving up four.
“Overall, for the night, I believe we had a good start. And I have a positive outlook for our future this year,” Coach Zipprich said.
Calhoun served up 36 aces in their six sets Monday.
Gabby Hurley had 10 digs, Stella Gress had nine and Annie Wilson had eight.
Wilson also had 12 kills while Camryn Klaas and Stella Gress each had seven for the evening, and Lucy Hurley had 25 assists out of a total of 37 kills.
The Lady Warriors will host their first home game of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 2, against Pikeland at 6 p.m.
