The New Philadelphia Association (NPA) recently announced the details of September’s Free Frank Freedom Day, an inspiring community event celebrating the historic achievement of Free Frank McWorter, who purchased his freedom and founded New Philadelphia, the first town in the United States platted and legally registered by an African American.
The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m. at the New Philadelphia National Historic Site.
This year’s celebration carries the theme: “A Blueprint for True American Democracy: The Legacy of Free Frank McWorter.” Through music, reflections, and a keynote address by Hannibal Historian, Faye Dant, the program will underscore the ideals of freedom, community, and civic engagement, illustrating how McWorter’s story serves as a model for democratic principles in action.
“Free Frank McWorter’s story is a testament to courage, vision, and the power of community,” said NPA President Kaye Iftner. “Through this event, we honor his legacy and invite everyone to participate in preserving and promoting New Philadelphia’s history. His actions laid the foundation for true American democracy, and this celebration gives us a chance to reflect on how we carry that blueprint forward today.”
The NPA invites all community members to attend. The event provides an opportunity to connect with descendants, learn about New Philadelphia’s history, and engage with ongoing preservation efforts.
Admission is free and open to the public.
