The Education Department is a long-standing tradition for the Calhoun County Fair. Always a fair favorite for all students from kindergarten to eighth grade from Brussels and Calhoun Elementary and Jr. High, St. Mary’s and St. Norbert’s.
Throughout the school year teachers save art, and educational projects that their students have completed throughout the school year. They then submit them to the education department at the Calhoun County Fair.
Calhoun Unit 40 teacher and fairboard member Joyce Titus was in charge of this for many years.
Mrs. Titus passed away in 2020, and in her memory, the building where these projects are displayed is now known as the “Joyce Titus Education Building.”
Educators throughout the area assist with the judging of these projects. Kids can’t wait to get to the fair and look in the building to see their work and show it to parents and grandparents.
Even better if they see a ribbon hanging on it. These ribbons also come with checks that are handed out the next week at school. They aren’t a lot of money, but they mean the world to the kids. The kids are actually more excited about the ribbon than they are the check, especially if that ribbon is a blue first place ribbon.
