Jerseyville man receives multiple charges following attempt to flee

BRENDAN M. STAMPER
On Saturday, Aug. 23, at approximately 6:15 PM, Sheriff William Heffington attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Illinois River Road and Royal Landing Road in Calhoun County, Illinois. The vehicle fled from Sheriff Heffington at a high rate of speed towards the Mississippi River.
Deputy Nic McCall arrived in the area to assist Sheriff Heffington in locating the suspect. Several Calhoun County citizens noticed the fleeing vehicle and advised CCSO officials that the driver of the suspect vehicle had abandoned the vehicle and jumped into the Mississippi River and was attempting to swim across the river.
Additional Calhoun County citizens arrived on scene with a boat; at which time they assisted Deputy McCall in apprehending the suspect who had now taken refuge on an island in the Mississippi River.
Brendan M. Stamper, aged 27, of Jerseyville, Illinois was arrested for the following offenses:
Aggravated DUI – 3rd or Subsequent,
Driving While Revoked
Aggravated Fleeing / Attempt to Elude Peace Officers,
Speeding (35 + or More)
Calhoun County Felony Warrant – Violation of Order of Protection
Stamper was transported to the Greene County Jail.
Stamper’s original arrest warrant stemmed from an investigation conducted by Deputies of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office following the report of a Violation of an Order of Protection which was alleged to have occurred on July 13, 2025, near the Village of Hamburg, Calhoun County, Illinois.
“The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Calhoun County citizens who assisted law enforcement during this highly stressful encounter. We would furthermore like to thank Two River’s Crimestoppers, who will be recognizing these heroes with their “Outstanding Citizenship Award”, which will be awarded at their monthly meeting on Sunday, Sept. 28,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a press release.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
